MOORSCAPE™ BRINGS YOU REVERSE HUM & WONKY FADERS

  • By bsa_mar

Whether or not #FolkWithBits ever catches on as a music genre, Moorscape™ has brought with it many moments of inspiration and so many happy accidents along the way. The aim has been to achieve a folk album with a difference, something that might stand out from the crowd in a world where there is so much innovative, quality folk music. If we achieve that then we will be happy.

The songs were all written before we went into the recording studio, and as the writer I felt they were passable songs that held to the principles of the album – to evoke the sights, sounds, spirit, and atmospheres of the British Moorlands and to tell a few of the stories that make up their social and political history. Each of the musicians has been given the freedom to create, so once the songs were written we didn’t really have a clue how the final versions would turn out. I guess the final verdict on that will be how the album is received by those who listen to it!

It was snowing outside when we recorded GUNS & THE DENIED on 4th March.
It was snowing outside when we recorded GUNS & THE DENIED on 4th March.

During the recording process we have experimented with a whole load of ideas many of which will never see the light of day, such as the reverse cittern and slide cittern that featured in the original version of INTERMISSION – a five minute wall of sound that had little connection with folk music. We still have that in our locker should we wish to shock at some future point, but we would rather not damage the ears we want to listen to the work we have created!

We have also kept faith with the cittern, because it would have been easy to drown its wonderful choral quality with clever instrumental pieces. We have created an album entirely in the key of G and did not change the tuning throughout. For those of you who know about these things, that could have signalled a diet of dullness, dreariness, and disaster. But we don’t think so.

So now here’s your challenge. There are at least two songs that feature ‘wonky faders’ and definitely one that features what we have dubbed the ‘reverse hum’. The first person who can pinpoint one example of each will receive a free copy of Moorscape™, and we might throw in a daft poem or two just for the heck of it!

Moorscape™ will be released in a few weeks time.
